Skin Cycling...Why it Makes Sense

Updated: Jan 20, 2023

It's the new buzz word in the skincare world, skin cycling! So what is it and why is it a trending approach to healthier skin? Skin Cycling is a term that was keyed by Dermatologist, Dr. Whitney Bowe and has since gone viral on TikTok and throughout the beauty industry. The theory is that our skin's barrier needs time throughout the week to repair and heal...basically a break from all of the products we slather on day and night. The approach is to use a form of exfoliation (preferably a chemical vs physical) on clean skin, on night 1. This preps the skin for night 2, which is when you would apply a retinol after you've cleansed. Nights 3 & 4 are for repair, meaning you give your skin a break from exfoliants and retinols and instead cleanse and use a hydrating serum, along with a repairing moisturizer. In theory, this gives your skin a chance to breathe and it also is an effective way to ease new products into your skincare routine. Of course, not every skin barrier is the same and for that reason we should all pay attention to our esthetician's advice on the proper products and frequency of which we use them. I enforce to my clients every time I see them, how important home care is for healthy, glowing skin...not to mention to see the results you are aiming for. Getting monthly facials is so important, but what you put on your face everyday is going to be the main way to success. Please ask me questions if you have them...I'd be so happy to get you going on a custom routine that helps you achieve your skincare goals! Skin cycling is definitely worth the buzz!!
